WHY COLLEGE SPORTS?

One of the key reasons athletes strive to earn a college sport scholarship is because it gives them the opportunity to earn a first class education at a fraction of the cost. Many of the world’s best universities such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Duke, Cal-Berkeley and UCLA are located in the USA.

These and many other good schools offer financial, academic and sport scholarships. America is one of the best places in the world where one can effectively combine a top-level soccer with a degree. Moreover, many schools can provide personal tutors and additional classes for the players when needed.

Many capable athletes don’t pursue a higher education because they fear losing contact with their sport. This is an unfortunate trade-off for many individuals who may have excellent academic potential and don’t realize it. A college sport scholarship can provide the optimal combination of sports and academics and it makes sense for those who feel they have a chance to pursue these opportunities.

The U.S. College system, as already mentioned, has produced some of the most well known names in sports. A student athlete can enjoy rewards in receiving first class coaching, sport development programs and free equipment. A normal schedule involves one to two training sessions or practices a day plus additional sport specific weight and fitness sessions. All this alongside a full university degree program.

#1. When is the best time to start with the recruiting process?

Athletic scholarships are more competitive than ever and coaches are sifting through more recruits than ever before. As a result, the recruiting process is starting earlier and earlier. The ideal time to start is 8-24 months before the season starts.

#2. How many high school athletes get a scholarship to a Division I school.

Less than 2% of high school athletes get a scholarship to a Division I school. Less than 1% get a full ride! It’s a common myth that Division I schools are the only option for collegiate scholarships, but in fact there are over 1,700 U.S. colleges and universities that sponsor collegiate athletics and offer financial assistance to players. 80% of those colleges are outside of Division I.

#3. How do College Coaches mainly recruit?

College coaches depend on verified information from reliable sources about prospects. When coaches attend tournaments, games and camps, they come with a list of student-athletes they know they want to evaluate – they’re not looking for new ones. Camps, combines, and showcases are useful to verify data for your athletic resume.

#4. How does a Coach start the evaluation process?

College coaches do most of their initial evaluation by looking at video from reliable sources, almost always delivered online. Coaches will generally only do an in-person evaluation if they’ve already seen video that interests them.

#5. What is a signal that an athlete is getting actively recruited?

Personal correspondence from college coaches is a great sign that an athlete is being actively recruited. Other recruiting materials like questionnaires, brochures, and camp invites are only important if you are able to turn them into relationships. Respond to all mail from coaches and make introductory telephone calls when appropriate. This is a great way to get ahead of your competition and get your recruiting profile in front of college coaches.

#6. What is The NCAA/NAIA Eligibility Center?

The NCAA and NAIA Eligibility Center determines if a student-athlete is eligible to compete as a freshman at the DI and DII level. Less than one in ten athletes who register with the NCAA and NAIA Eligibility Center ever play in college. They will not get you in touch with coaches, get your highlight video viewed, or even give you any advice. The NCAA and NAIA Eligibility Center is something you need to check off your recruiting checklist.

#7. The recruiting process is…

Many recruits and families wrongly assume recruiting will be free and easy – nothing could be further from the truth. Recruiting will cost a significant amount of time, effort and money! The investments in equipment, a competitive non-school team, training, travel, camps and showcases can add up hundreds of hours of time and thousands of dollars. Simply put: recruiting is hard work…but it’s totally worth it. The opportunity to play college sports is a life-changing experience and can set an athlete up for success long after their playing days are over. Don’t miss out on the chance of a lifetime because you expected the process to take care of itself. Sometimes, a good video edit or the appropriate message can save you thousands of dollars.
